#6 in the “SUJ Plays…” series.
A Southampton Ukulele Jam version of the vinyl listening party. We’ve done albums (and we’ll do some more in the future). We’ve done artist best-ofs (and we’ll do more of those as well). But this time we’re going to focus in on the very best singles of one year. And that year is 1979. A year of disco and new wave. Electronics and post-punk. Ska and pop. Prog and hard rock. Hopefully we’ll be doing some of it all.
The usual format, with the songs (hopefully) played from glorious 7″ vinyl singles (authentic crackle will be included). We’ll be listening to each of the original songs, and then playing each track together, as a ukulele jam. Getting a sense of how it was done, and then jamming together, putting SUJ’s unique spin on each track.
The set list for the evening is as follows:
London Calling – The Clash
Is She Really Going Out With Him? – Joe Jackson
Making Plans For Nigel – XTC
Bright Side Of The Road – Van Morrison
Tears Of A Clown – The Beat
Stop Your Sobbing – The Pretenders
Jimmy Jimmy – The Undertones
Heart Of Glass – Blondie
Another Brick In The Wall – Pink Floyd
Boys Don’t Cry – The Cure
Video Killed The Radio Star – The Buggles
Crazy Little Thing Called Love – Queen
Message In A Bottle – The Police
The Eton Rifles – The Jam
We Are Family – Sister Sledge
You can download a copy of the songbook with all these songs here
This time we’ll be at a new venue – the function room at The Juniper Berry, in Upper Bugle Street. See you there.
